Friends,

“Medicolegal Society of India” - when you see this name, you will wonder, why this one more medicolegal society when there are so many others in our country. But I would like to bring to your notice that most of the ones are led by either individuals or individual professional faculty organizations or only as cells of larger professional organizations. Some others are formed by medicolegal experts with vested interest to promote their own professions. So it was felt that there is a need for medicolegal society, which should be a not for profit organization led by medicolegal experts, mainly doctors who have qualifications in law. This organization should be able to cater to the needs of private practitioners in all specialties and super specialties as well as doctors in service who face injustice due to various situations.

The association aims at providing legal assistance to doctors facing medical negligence accusations and also legally assists the doctors who are victims of violence.

Apart from this there is a need to look at old and new legislation which affect the doctors and their practice adversely. There is also need to create awareness amongst the doctors as well as society at large regarding these legislations. It’s also important that the doctors are aware of the patients’ rights and the patients are made aware of their responsibilities. All these issues are extremely important in fostering good relations amongst the doctors, their patients and the civil society. The medicolegal society of India hopes to achieve all this.

I congratulate Dr. Rajeev Joshi in founding this important organization and gathering many dedicated and eminent medicolegal experts for this purpose and motivating and helping doctors at all levels of the society for their participation. I am very positive that this organization will follow this significant goal in a dedicated manner.

With sincere regards
